Gilmore Co-Working Space

December 2022

18 Lower Gilmore Place, Fountainbridge, Edinburgh

Co-working Space

Situated across from Fountainpark, this project reactivates Lower Gilmore Place by introducing a dynamic co-working space designed to complement the area’s evolving landscape. The intervention seeks to bridge the gap between past and future, transforming an underutilised site into a vibrant hub for collaboration and creativity.

The open-plan workspace fosters interaction, with flexible layouts accommodating diverse working styles. Large openings invite natural light and visual connectivity to the street, encouraging engagement between the interior and the urban environment. A carefully curated material palette blends warmth and functionality, creating an inviting atmosphere for professionals, entrepreneurs, and the local community.

Beyond a place of work, the project serves as a catalyst for social and economic renewal, seamlessly integrating with new developments to breathe life back into Lower Gilmore Place.

Architecture Design : In Place Y2

Jamie Henry & David Byrne

Personal Reflection : In Place is the only design course where I was not fully satisfied with my final proposal. Something about the design never felt entirely resolved, and I believe there were many aspects that could have been significantly improved. As a result, I often find myself revisiting this project, searching for answers that eluded me during its development.

One of the biggest challenges was the site itself—a medium-sized plot enclosed on three sides by walls. This constraint made spatial organisation and visual openness particularly difficult. Since completing the course, I have reimagined the design with a more refined approach, resulting in a solution that feels both more cohesive and visually balanced.

In hindsight, I recognise that the project lacked sufficient development and a deeper consideration of its broader context. However, I am ultimately grateful for the experience, as it has made me more meticulous in my design process and more conscious of the impact of each decision. The lessons learned from this project have directly informed and strengthened my subsequent work, pushing me towards more thoughtful and well-integrated architectural solutions.
